Born in March 1999,

in the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Manjula Punchihewa and Priyangani Wijekoon, Hesara Punchihewa grew up with an incessant urge within him to always go beyond the conventional - to walk paths that weren’t deemed familiar or traditional by many.

Having his father Manjula Punchihewa, a brilliant songwriter himself; his uncle Wasantha Dukgannarala, a well-known and widely celebrated composer/lyricist in the country, and several other prominent artistic personalities in the family, Hesara never had to look far for inspiration to bring out the yearning taste for art within his own self.

Spending most of his childhood

in Sri Lanka’s beautiful hillcountry; namely the cities of Kandy and Matale;

Hesara completed his primary and secondary education at the prestigious Trinity College, Kandy.

Perhaps Hesara’s most notable achievement in his youngest years was when he caught the eyes of many, winning the National All-Island Prize for Spoken and Written English at the IWMS Sri Lanka, for 5 consecutive times through the years 2008-2011!

In his notable years at Trinity College, Hesara excelled at his academics from a young age. Securing best results for the GCE Ordinary Levels with 9 straight A passes, he went onto follow the stream of Biological Science with a taunting dream to one day wear the stethoscope around his neck, like many in his family.

Being the all-rounder he was, Hesara is an athletic a writer as one might meet; quite evident through his undying love for the sport of swimming. Excelling in his specialty - the 50m and 100m Breaststroke, he swam for his college throughout his schooling years, winning several zonal and provincial medals.

Through the years 2015 to 2018, Hesara also played his hand at the college Athletics team as a track athlete for 100m and 200m. Though not as prominent, Hesara also went onto make his contributions to the college cricket and boxing teams through the years 2011-2013.

As wonderful a sportsman as he is,  it is a well-known fact within his circle that Hesara is also a keen musician. Completing his 6 years of study at the Bhathkande Sangeeth Vidyapeeth, Lucknow, he attained the ‘Visharad’ qualification in Instrumental Violin.

In the meantime, Hesara also invested a bit of his youth in trekking his path along music of the Western world, completing several examinations from Preliminary to Grade 4 in Piano and Western Music at the Institute of Western Music and Speech (IWMS) in Sri Lanka.

Stepping into his career as an author first in the year 2020, Hesara launched his inaugural book

‘A LIE OF A LIFE’

In same year, Hesara got enlisted by the Grodno State Medical University in Belarus, where he is currently undergoing his 6th and final year of study in the process of completing his degree in Doctor of Medicine (MD).

Wedged between his medical and writing careers, Hesara once again proved his ability of successfully juggling between the two, as he launched his second book

‘PLAYING THE DEVIL’S HAND’ to the public, in August 2024.
